Have you ever dreamt of going from one place to other without all that stress of traffic? Well, the present solution is to get a driver, but that’s not the future. Many companies are trying to develop completely autonomous cars which include Tesla, the most well-known electric car company, and some big players like Mercedes, you might not have heard of Waymo.

Waymo was a Google subsidiary for a long time. It started as Google’s numerous experiment which may never see the light of the day, led by

director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and co-inventor of Google Street View, Sebastian Thrun. This project started in 2009 when the self-driven car was not even thought about by the people. They started to modify Toyota Prius with all the pieces of equipment required for autonomous driving. Today, Waymo is subsidiary of Google’s parent company, Alphabet.

Google has a parent company, Suprised? Alphabet Inc. is the parent company of Google. Created during the corporate reconstruction of Google, in October of 2015. Alphabet Inc. is the parent company of Google, CapitalG and Waymo.

Waymo uses LIDAR technology for their autonomous vehicles. LIDAR is a surveying method that measures the distance to a target by

illuminating it with pulsed laser light and measuring the reflected pulses with a sensor. Most of the car companies use this tech for their autonomous action, in contrast Elon Musk claims that this tech is ridiculously expensive and Tesla’s can be Level 5 autonomous, which is fully autonomous by the way without LIDAR. Also it was a google subsidiary so Waymo uses machine learning obviously.

Waymo started testing its autonomous cars in November of 2017. This was a major breakthrough as there was no safety driver in place, the car was driving itself. You can see the video of people driving in it on YouTube, just click here.
